Richard Cutler is the owner and winemaker of Flying Dutchman Winery, one of the only working wineries on the Oregon Coast. Located in Otter Rock, the winery features chardonnay, riesling, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc and syrah. Here are some of his favorite places to eat, drink and relax on the Central Coast.
Coffee stops: Big Mountain Coffee Company (north of Depoe Bay) roasts its own beans and has won many awards. In Otter Rock, a 1934 Dodge panel truck serves as JoAnn’s Espresso and Ice Cream Truck.
Tidal Raves Restaurant: This Depoe Bay spot has been a favorite of mine for many years. I especially like their scallops and pasta. The service is the best.
Mo’s Seafood: These family-owned restaurants in Lincoln City, Otter Rock, Newport and Florence are nationally known for their chowder and locally known for their generosity.
The Bonepile BBQ: Along Highway 101 in Depoe Bay, the barbeque here, smoked daily, is second to none. Try my favorite sandwich (it’s called the SOB) — a mix of pulled pork, beef and chicken.
Hiking: The north trail at Cascade Head (just north of Lincoln City) starts in a Hemlock forest and continues to the ocean. South of Lincoln City, Drift Creek Falls has gentle slopes and a wide, accessible trail. The suspension bridge and falls are worth the effort. South of Cape Perpetua, Cummins Creek Trail wanders through pristine forest for as far as you want to go.
Jessie M. Honeyman State Park: This is my family’s favorite camping place — a well-maintained campground, huge sand dunes for sand boarding, a picturesque fresh-water lake with canoes and plenty of elbow room.
Historic Nye Beach Shopping District: Charisma Gifts, in particular, has a wide selection and is my go-to place for unusual and artistic gifts. This is the best place for a lasting Oregon take-home memory.
The Mazatlan Restaurant: In Depoe Bay, the area’s best Mexican eatery is tasty and affordable. I like their enchiladas and refried beans.
The Oregon Coast Aquarium: Located in Newport, the aquarium is one of the most interesting attractions on the Coast. My grandkids never miss a chance to spend time here.
