Chefs from Newport's Sylvia Beach Hotel share their secret recipes

For some people, an ideal trip to the beach means gamboling about in the sand and water. Other people want nothing more than to lie for hours in the hot sun. And then there are people who dream of curling up with a good book in front of a cozy fireplace, occasionally looking up to contemplate the eternal sea. It is to those people, the readers, that Sylvia Beach Hotel is dedicated.

Perched on a 45-foot cliff in the Nye Beach area of Newport, the venerable hotel opened in its current reincarnation in 1987. Goody Cable and Sally Ford bought the old, run-down 1912 building, corralled friends into decorating rooms in themes of famous authors, set aside the uppermost floor as a library and the lower floor as a restaurant. They painted the building an enigmatic blue-green: It’s blue today; no it’s green; maybe it’s blue; sometimes, it’s dark gray.
