Clamming Explorience
Search for Purple Varnish clams in Siletz Bay at low tide during this Clamming Explorience. Discover all the tips and secrets to finding these delicious treats.
Guided by a local expert, travel to the mudflats of Siletz Bay at low tide. There you will be provided an overview of Oregon’s clamming regulations, harvesting methods, identification, cleaning, and cooking techniques. Armed with expert information, enjoy the hunt and see how many clams you can dig up.
Regulations state that each clammer is allowed a limit of 72 Purple Varnish clams to take home. Clamming Explorience events last for approximately one to two hours, are free and require no registration to participate.
On June 17th at 10:30 a.m., meet at the covered pavilion at the west end of SW 51st Street in the Historic Taft neighborhood to begin the hunt.
Essential Clamming Gear
- Shellfish license (available at locations listed below) – for clam diggers aged 12 and over
- Clam bag or bucket
- Shovel
- Gloves
*NOTE: Materials and supplies should be purchased prior to attending the Explorience.
Safety
Please be mindful and practice beach safety as you clam. Always face the ocean, be wary of beach logs and debris, protect wildlife habitat, and keep small children and animals near you at all times.
Instructor
Abigail DeYoung is a native Oregonian with a general biology degree, finishing her education at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology. While a Certified Interpretive Guide through the National Association of Interpretive Guides, Abigail has enjoyed working in Lincoln City's woods and shores.
