Don’t Miss Summer Events

Posted by The Oregon Coast / May 29, 2015

Summer on the Oregon Coast is jammed with events celebrating everything from clams and tuna to dory fleets and wooden boats. Whether you plan to tap your toes at a music festival, take part in a fun run, or watch kites riding the breeze, be sure to mark your calendar for one (or more) of these fun events.

The Siletz Bay Music Festival (June 24 – July 5) features classical, jazz and musical theater. Classical artists also abound at the Yachats Music Festival (July 10 – 12). Catch some big name acts in country music at the Cape Blanco Country Music Festival (July 31 – August 2).

Dog-lovers will enjoy the Mutt Masters Dog Show & Olympics (June 20) in Lincoln City, with competitions for all breeds, doggie vendors and more; just down the road, the Pacific City Yappy Days (June 20) gives pups and their owners a day filled with dog-friendly activities on the beach.

Head to the Astoria Open Studio Tour (July 25-26) for a peek inside the studios of artists working in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, fiber art, printmaking, photography and more. The Festival of Art in Brookings’ Stout Park (August 1-2) features original art and handcrafted items, kids’ activities, live music and food booths.

The Oregon Coast’s windy conditions are perfect kite flying. See how the pros do it at Lincoln City’s Summer Kite Festival (June 27-28), with demos, kids’ events, and kite-making workshops, and at the Southern Oregon Kite Festival in Brookings (July 17-19), where well-known kite fliers and makers display their creations. Food and artists’ booths round out the event.

Learn how to harvest local shellfish at Waldport’s Clam-A-Rama (July 4-5), when park rangers teach the tricks behind catching these tasty treasures. If just eating the seafood is more your thing, head to Newport for the Great Albacore Tuna BBQ Challenge (August 8) and all-you-can-eat samples of the tuna fresh from the docks. The Charleston Seafood Festival is a family-friendly party where seafood takes center stage (August 8-9).

Cape Kiwanda’s Dory Days Festival (July 17-19) celebrates the century-old fishing tradition of beach-launched rowing dories with a parade, marine fair, artisan fair, fishing contests, live music, children’s activities and a fish fry. Experience the historic tradition of wooden boats at the Port of Toledo Wooden Boat Show (August 15 -16), where boat exhibits and rides, vendors, music, boat building activities and races are part of the fun.

Fun Runs
Celebrate July 4th with the Mayor’s Firecracker Run (July 4) in Coos Bay. Enter a 5K run/walk, 10K run or Kids Fun Run at the Cedar Creek Beach Challenge (August 2), starting at ending at the Pelican Pub & Brewery in Pacific City. Or gather some friends for the Circle the Bay Relays (August 11) in North Bend.
