Beer 101 and a New Brew for the North Coast

Posted by The Oregon Coast / September 27, 2013

Oregon’s North Coast beer cup will run over this October with Beer 101, a two-weekend celebration and quest to name a signature coast brew. Brewers from Astoria’s Fort George Brewery + Public House, Seaside Brewing Company, Astoria Brewing Company and Bill’s Tavern and Brewhouse in Cannon Beach have joined forces to create a brand new craft brew, and the beer-loving public is invited to help them name it. Find out more about the special collaboration beer here.

Throughout October, the new beer will be available at more than a dozen locations from Astoria to Cannon Beach. Beer lovers are invited to enter a contest to compose the new brew moniker. The lucky winner will receive six nights of lodging — three two-night stays in Astoria, Seaside and Cannon Beach — along with dining certificates for each town. Restaurants, breweries and pubs will extend the fun with food specials, beer tastings and pairings, beer-centric programs and other special events. Here’s a sampling:

  • On Saturday, October 19 at 3 p.m., people can meet the Beer Goddess Lisa Morrison at Fort George Brewery + Public House in Astoria. The author of “Craft Beers of the Pacific Northwest” and host of the radio show “Beer O’Clock” will lead a discussion about the importance of glassware and aroma in the beer tasting experience.
  • October 19, 20, 26 and 27, U Street Pub & Eatery in Seaside will host behind-the-scenes tours of the brewing operation at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.
  • On Friday, October 25 at 6:30 p.m. at Astoria’s Wet Dog Café, John Foyston, The Oregonian’s beer columnist, will talk about the evolution of Oregon’s craft beer industry over the years.
  • At Seaside Brewing Company on Saturday, October 26 at 6 p.m., Foyston will host a four-course, five-beer dinner with brews from Seaside Brewing, Bill’s Tavern, Fort George and Astoria Brewing.
