On November 23rd, the Wild Rivers Coast Mountain Bicycling Association held their annual holiday club ride at Pine Grove trail in the Rogue Siskiyou National Forest, just east of Gold Beach and near the small community of Agness. Even with the recent Bomb Cyclone that had gone through the area a few days prior, Pine Grove was riding fast, just not as fast as usual.  Sure, there were a few places where trees had fallen across the trail and some drainage issues that needed to be addressed, but it’s what you expect during winter riding conditions on the coast. It was very wet, but there was no snow on the ground and riders were just stoked to get some riding in with old and new friends alike.

More than 22 riders showed up to get the free shuttles to the top of Pine Grove with the aid of the bike club’s bike trailer that was funded through a partnership with Bandon Dunes Charitable Foundation and the use of the youth bus from the generous folks at First Baptist Church in Gold Beach.

Pine Grove is a great downhill multi use trail that starts around 3,500′ above the famous Wild and Scenic Rogue River and descends for about 6.5 miles through open prairie and thick forest on an exciting single track trail. Pine Grove is typically very fast and technical in spots, but on this wet day it was all technical with slippery rocks and roots ending in some recently rebuilt flow trail on the lower mile or so.

After the rides, Cougar Lane Lodge in Agness opened up just for us for food and beverages as long as the muddy riders changed their clothes before entering the restaurant. You can learn more about the bike club at their website. https://wrcmba.com/
