Hanthorn Cannery Museum

The historic Hanthorn Cannery is the oldest fish processing plant remaining on the lower Columbia River (dating from 1875). The facility houses a collection of historic equipment and documents that is second only to the Columbia River Maritime Museum in the region. Many of these resources are accessible to the public at the Hanthorn Cannery Museum, located at what is now called Pier 39, in historic Astoria, Oregon. The Museum displays several wooden gill-netters and other craft on permanent loan, canning machinery, and processing equipment inside the original freezer rooms where tuna was stored before canning.

The Hanthorn Cannery Foundation was founded in 2003 by former workers and managers of the Columbia River Packers Association (CRPA) and the Bumble Bee Seafood Corporation to commemorate the work done by thousands of employees who worked there between 1875 and the late 20th century. Bumble Bee Seafoods was founded in Astoria, Oregon, and closed its headquarters there in 1981. There is a monument commemorating the women cannery workers located on the East of Astoria's Riverwalk.
