From a cruise down Highway 101 to world-class singletrack and an endless paradise of forest service and logging roads – the Oregon Coast has something for every kind of cyclist. Rent a fat bike for a sunset beach cruise, get competitive at a race, or pack up your gravel bike for a multi-day adventure.

Why Cycling?

Cycling is a low-impact way to get the most out of your trip to the coast – and in our opinion, there’s no better way to experience the incredible nature and unique charm of the small coastal communities throughout the region.

Mountain Biking

Riders looking to rip a trail through a deep forest will find an incredible network of mountain biking trails at Klootchy Creek (Clatsop County), Big Creek Trails (Newport), and Whiskey Run Trail System (Coos Bay). Whisky Run is a network of MTB trails encompassing 32 miles of prime riding — enough tracks to give you an all-day adrenaline boost.

Ride the Dirt Wave

OCVA is a proud sponsor of the Ride the Dirt Wave mountain biking event series, which kicks off at Klootchy Creek Trails in Clatsop County, followed by events at Whiskey Run in Coos County and Big Creek in Newport.

Mountain Bike Oregon

While not on the coast, this year we’re also getting hyped for Mountain Bike Oregon, the all-inclusive three-day mountain biking festival featuring Oakridge’s best singletrack. OCVA is this year’s sponsor, and our staff can’t wait to hit the trails.

After an epic weekend, we’re encouraging riders to take the long way home and enjoy a piece of our 365 miles of coastline, where they’ll find endless adventure possibilities and even more world-class mountain biking. Learn more about Mountain Bike Oregon here.

Gravel Biking

Gravel enthusiasts rejoice! The Oregon Coast is quickly becoming known as a gravel paradise – with our endless networks of forest roads that offer stunning scenery and solitude, the possibilities for routes are endless.

Gravel Routes

Adventurers looking for day rides, overnighters or even multi-day trips can start their search by checking out the work of our partners at Dirty Freehub, who are working to develop routes up and down the coast. Stay tuned for a gravel guide and a few new routes next year!

Two gravel events, one weekend!

• The Oregon Coast Gravel Epic in Waldport
  Start your season with this epic Pacific Northwest spring classic at the coast. This gravel cycling event showcases the raw beauty of ancient Siuslaw National Forests and is geared towards the enthusiast cyclist looking for a well-marked and supported event.
• West Coast Gravel in Yachats
  West Coast Gravel celebrates the explorer in all of us as you make your way to the shores of the Pacific and take on the Siuslaw National Forest’s unforgettable backroads.

Fat Biking

Thinking about renting a fat bike to ride on the beach at sunset? Fat bikes are a great way to experience the beach, and they can be ridden year-round and are great on sand, snow and loose dirt. Click here for some of our favorite route ideas.

Fat bike rentals are available all over the coast. Local shops are sure to have recommendations for the best routes and times, but start here for information on routes and rentals.

Road Biking

Oregon Coast cycling route

The Oregon Coast Bike Route is the classic 370-mile jaunt from border to border. It’s one of the most spectacular stretches of road in the United States, displaying countless scenic panoramas, hitting legendary spots while also unveiling some hidden gems that are off the normal tourist path.

The route is mapped and signed by Oregon Department of Transportation; the official map details camping resources (including designated bike-camping locations). With the detailed mapping available, it’s easy to hop on and off at any point that makes sense for your schedule. Pick your segment, make your plans, and go. The route is best ridden north to south, to take advantage of normal wind patterns. September is an optimal time to check it out, because tourist traffic on the roads drops off after Labor Day.
