Self-Guided Rockaway Beach Historic Walking Tour
After three years of volunteers’ hard work, they’re launching an interactive walking tour guiding guests between photo murals and plaques at Rockaway Beach’s historic buildings. The stories and photos are captivating and will draw guests from one door to the next, creating an experience that celebrates heritage, character, and timeless charm.
Rockaway Beach was the origin of coastal high-life at the turn of the century… Natatorium & Dance Hall, surf, sand and bathing beauties, beach bonfires and glamping. The Main Street boardwalk housed general stores and candy stores, a post office and motels, and a pool hall run by Red Headed Ruby, the local bootlegger.
Historical information and narrative context for this tour were developed in part using materials from author Rosemary Walker and her Memories Magazine. This tour honors the work of Rosemary Walker and Memories Magazine in documenting the stories and heritage of Rockaway Beach.
Organized by the Rockaway Beach Chamber of Commerce & Community Education Historic Beautification Committee.
