RJ Marx Presents: The Story of Seaside’s 1963 Labor Day Riots
The Cannon Beach History Center & Museum kicks off its fall lecture season with award-winning journalist and author RJ Marx on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at 4 p.m. Following his presentation earlier this year on the 1962 Seaside riots, Marx returns to explore the following year’s unrest and one of the most turbulent chapters in North Coast history: the 1963 Seaside Labor Day Riots.
On Labor Day weekend in 1963, the coastal community of Seaside erupted in unrest as thousands of young visitors descended upon the popular resort town. What began as a holiday weekend escalated into confrontations with law enforcement, widespread property damage, and more than 70 arrests. By the time the unrest subsided late Monday night, damage to local homes, businesses, and infrastructure was estimated at $100,000.
Seaside was not alone. Across the country, resort communities were grappling with similar unrest as a changing youth culture challenged traditional expectations and local authorities struggled to maintain order.
In his book, Seaside’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Riots 1962–1964, Marx examines the social, economic, and political forces that shaped this pivotal moment in Seaside’s history. His research explores how the community sought to reclaim its identity as a family-friendly tourist destination while navigating the cultural changes sweeping across America.
An award-winning journalist and author residing in Seaside, Oregon, Marx brings a unique perspective to this fascinating chapter of local history, connecting the events of the early 1960s to the broader evolution of American society.
Join Cannon Beach History Center & Museum for an engaging afternoon of local history as they revisit the events that shook a coastal community and left a lasting mark on Seaside’s identity.
Copies of Marx’s book, Seaside’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Riots 1962–1964, will be available for purchase at the event.
This lecture is free and open to the public.
