Newport Sea Lions

Along Newport’s bustling bayfront lies one of the Oregon Coast's most enchanting free wildlife attractions: the Sea Lion Docks. Nestled near Port Dock One and easily accessible from public walkways and Clearwater Restaurant's deck, these docks host a vibrant colony of California sea lions (Zalophus californianus), with occasional visits from larger, lighter-toned Steller sea lions.

Year-round viewing — male California sea lions haul out from late summer through spring; breeding season migration south means fewer arrivals in mid-summer, but August sees their return.

Size & sound — male sea lions can reach 7–8 ft and over 800 lb; their booming barks and grunts fill the air, while natural sea scents usher in a marine ambiance.

Newport is a perfect spot for these mammals because of a protected harbor with calm waters that offers sturdy floating docks and the presence of abundant fish (and scraps!) from local commercial boats in the area.

As you navigate Newport's vibrant bayfront and docks, the selfie billboard by artist Christine Lisama on Port Dock One will guide you to the sea lion docks. This evocative backdrop invites you to create and capture Newport memories.
