Gyotaku Master Class

Come learn the beautiful folk art of Japanese Fish Printing (Gyotaku) under the tutelage of local artist, Duncan Berry. This full-day class (6 hours) will be hosted by Pelican Brewing at Siletz Bay. Allow the exquisite Bay view to inspire your creative, original pieces of art printed directly from the marine species themselves.

When: March 14, 2026, 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Where: Pelican Brewing at Siletz Bay / 2nd floor.

What: This is an opportunity to print a dozen or more beautiful, direct impression prints inspired by octopus and fin fish that inhabit Oregon's coastal waters. Participants will explore the textures, forms, and movement of these remarkable animals through the traditional art of gyotaku. No prior art experience is necessary. This class is welcoming to beginners and deeply rewarding for experienced printers. As a special bonus, participants will learn fascinating, story-rich insights about the lives of octopus and fin fish, as well as how these species fit into Oregon’s Marine Reserve program.

Who: The workshop instructor will be Duncan Berry, Master Gyotaku artist and naturalist. Duncan offers only a handful of workshops per year, so this is one of few opportunities to learn directly from his extensive background of refining and expanding this traditional printing technique.

Cost: $300 per person which includes 6 hours of instruction, all necessary materials and specimens, as well as a delicious lunch provided by Pelican Brewing.

Register early. Class is limited to only 15 participants to ensure a hands-on, personalized experience.
