Removing freshly baked salmon from alder stakes

The smell of salmon fillets roasting over a crackling wood fire pit will fill the air in Depoe Bay this coming Saturday, September 16, at the annual Indian-Style Salmon Bake.  The Salmon Bake is renowned as the Oregon coast’s signature salmon celebration, drawing salmon lovers from throughout the state to enjoy both food and fun.

This year the feast will take place on Saturday, Sept. 16 from 10 am to 5 pm.  Pacific salmon will be cooked in the traditional technique used for generations by native coastal tribes.  Preparations begin months in advance when volunteers head to the woods to cut 350 six-foot long stakes of alder wood.

Before sunrise on the morning of the event a huge 80-foot fire line will be lit with six cords of fir and three cords of alder.   Thousands of pounds of salmon fillets are positioned on the alder wood stakes over the fire line, imparting rich flavors to the salmon as they bake to perfection.

Complete meals are served in 8-ounce salmon steaks together with coleslaw, garlic bread and a beverage.  Meal tickets are $23 in advance or $25 at the gate.  As the number of meals are limited, advance orders are recommended at the Depoe Bay Chamber of Commerce website,

Visitors to the Salmon Bake will enjoy a free program of traditional and native American music and dance.  A raffle will be held for thousands of dollars worth of exciting prizes including whale-watching excursions, hotel stays, fishing charters, restaurants, gift shops and more.

The Indian-Style Salmon Bake and related festivities will take place at the Depoe Bay City Park, located at the south end of the town’s picturesque harbor.  Free shuttles will take visitors to and from the park, as well as from the park to downtown shops along the ocean front.  Many Depoe Bay merchants offer special discounts during the Salmon Bake event.

Depoe Bay enjoys nearly year-round whale watching and has become known as “Oregon’s Whale Watching Capitol”.   The long seawall offers exciting views of gray whales feeding just off the rocks during this time of year.  Charter boats take visitors to see these majestic giants up close along the scenic coastline.

The Salmon Bake is a non-profit event sponsored by the Depoe Bay Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and residents.  Proceeds help fund Chamber activities as well as town events and improvement projects.
