Join the Coast’s Spring Clean Up

Posted by The Oregon Coast / January 30, 2014

Oregon’s beaches are the pride of the state, but with millions of visitors every year, it’s no small feat to keep them pristine.

That’s where SOLVE comes in. A nonprofit focused on environmental stewardship, SOLVE organizes an army of volunteers to pick up litter and clear debris along the coast each spring and fall. Volunteers pick up everything car tires to the smallest bits of plastic, paper and trash, all of which wreak havoc on marine life.

The SOLVE Spring cleanup event takes place Saturday, March 22, 2014, at 47 sites from Astoria to Brookings. Last year, 4,161 volunteers removed 54,937 pounds of debris from the beach.

Among them were Sarah Evans and her family from Salem. For Evans, whose birthday is in March, participating in a SOLVE Clean Up started as a way to throw an unconventional birthday bash.

“I was fully expecting a few people would come, but it turned out to be a group of about 20. Evans says. “Everyone felt good about celebrating in a different way.”

In 2012 her 7-month-old son Archer joined in the fun. “My husband Stuart had him in a baby carrier. He carried the baby on the front and still picked up trash.”

After the cleanup, the group convened at the Rogue Brewery in Newport for a late lunch and celebratory brews.

“It’s a really fun way to spend the day with friends and family,” Evans says. “By spending the day cleaning those beaches, we know they are going to be nicer when we visit later.”

SOLVE invites beach-goers of all ages to participate. General registration opens January 24, 2014.

If you are part of a school, business, club or other organization that would like to bring a group, contact Kaleen Boyle at [email protected] or 503.844.9571 to register.
