SHORE ENOUGH? - Oregon Coast Visitors Association

Posted by OCVA / August 2, 2012

Summer’s in full swing here on The People’s Coast, and at this point in time maybe you’re starting to wonder if you’ve spent nearly enough time experiencing firsthand the wonders of our great Pacific Coast. Well, let’s see if we can help spur you into action. From horseback beach rides and kayak tours to seafood feasts and pirate fetes, we’re bursting at the seams with food, festivals and family fun! So, think you can find enough room in your busy schedule for a grand coastal getaway? Sure you can!

Let’s start with a little food for thought. This month you’ll find the 54th Annual Salmon BBQ in Coos Bay and Seafood Festival in Charleston. Foraged food tips from Chef Justin Willis in Depoe Bay. Freshly made fudge at the Cheese Factory in Tillamook. And, of course, your pick of a cornucopia of fresh local produce at farmers markets up and down the coast.

Feel like horsing around on the beach? Mosey over to Nehalem, Cannon Beach, Lincoln City, Florence or Pistol River, where you can mount up for a tour of the beach on a trained and well-mannered equine. Take it from the horse’s mouth, you won’t want to say neigh to this experience.

Looking to revive your spirits? Take in the Devils Lake Revival festivities, tickle your fancy at a comedy concert or join the Sandcastle Contest in Lincoln City. Sample a slice of life at the 118th Astoria Regatta Festival in Astoria. Celebrate Native American culture at the Nesika Illahee Pow-Wow in Siletz . Or how about this – walk, talk and dress like a pirate at the Pirate Treasure Hunt events in Depoe Bay. Parrots optional.

Enjoy a free outdoor concert in Reedsport or rock out at the Rock & Gem Show in North Bend. Motor over to Toledo or Lincoln City for their celebrations of classic cars. Introduce yourself to art and artists during the free Art Walk Bus Tour in Florence. And allow us to float this suggestion: You wouldn’t want to miss the annual Wooden Boat Show in Toledo.

Maybe these ideas will float your boat: Rent a canoe, pontoon boat or motorized watercraft in Lincoln City; stand up and paddle the tides in Toledo or search for hidden treasure on a kayak tour in Tillamook. Learn to kayak and ocean surf in Newport or sign up for the Stand-Up Paddle Board Retreat sponsored by the Inn at Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City. All of that is sure to surf you right.

If you’re more of a landlubber by nature, Oregon Parks & Recreation is sponsoring a weekend family camping experience for novice campers at Nehalem Bay and Beverly Beach state parks. And they’ll even supply the tents, sleeping bags and pads!

Spokespersons tell us that one of the best ways to experience the wonders of The People’s Coast is by bicycle. Pedal the Three Capes Scenic area between Tillamook and Pacific City or explore the Waldport area for free with a bicycle from Green Bike Co-op. If you start to get a little saddle sore, Sea Haven Guest House in Rockaway Beach and Bike Newport in Newport offer bicycle-tour-friendly accommodations, and Oregon Parks & Recreation can help you locate a campsite available solely for visitors arriving by foot or bike. Free Bike Repair Kits are also available at several locations in Lincoln City.

On board yet? Catch some air at the skate parks in Cannon Beach, Seaside, Newport, Toledo and Waldport. If you prefer a more cultured air to your entertainment, catch a performance of “The Pearl” in Lincoln City, the musical stylings of “Shanghaied in Astoria” or the opening reception at Ozone Fine Art Gallery for an exhibit of encaustics and metal sculpture in Newport.

Whatever your interests, or your budget, you’ll find us very accommodating here on The People’s Coast. The Ocean Front Hallmark Resort in Cannon Beach is taking reservations for next month’s Couples Surf & Spa Getaway Package. In Pacific City you can take your pick of the Rollin’ on the River Package at the Cottages at Cape Kiwanda or the Campfire on the Beach Package at the Inn at Cape Kiwanda.

This month you’ll find discounted lodging offers at Whaler Motel in Newport and The Inn at Spanish Head in Lincoln City. Dog-friendly accommodations at Silver Surf Motel and Edgewater Cottages in Yachats. And in Florence, Driftwood Shores Resort offers easy access to a full array of coastal activities, including a sunset helicopter tour for two with their Land Sea & Air Package.

So, is there enough time for you to take in every event and activity on The People’s Coast this month? Probably not. But it sure would be fun to try.

A little bird told us that you’ve enjoyed your very own fantastic adventure on The People’s Coast. Well, don’t be a bad egg; share your stories with us online, on Facebook or on Twitter.
