INDEPENDENT OPPORTUNITIES! - Oregon Coast Visitors Association

Posted by OCVA / June 28, 2012

What better place to celebrate our collective independence than on the glorious, publicly owned shores of The People’s Coast? We’ve got free spirits and free outdoor concerts. Celestial displays and community parades. Free-wheeling bicycle tours and kayaking treasure hunts. Horseback beach rides and independent flights of fancy. So feel free to grab your Yankee Doodle Sweetheart and celebrate our independence with the party of your choice. It’s a free country after all.

Let’s get this party started with a little Star Spangled banter; or, as the astonished cave man exclaimed: “Fire works!” Awesome displays of pyrotechnics will light up the sky over Siletz Bay in Lincoln City and Old Town in Florence. Get in step with your inner John Philip Sousa at the annual Independence Day parades in Gleneden Beach or Astoria, where you can even join the Kazoo and Bucket Marching Band. That should get things humming!

Get in the swing of things at the 32nd Annual Yachats Music Festival in Yachats, the vaudeville meets Hollywood musical comedy performance of Shanghaied In Astoria and The Jacksons concert (with actual Jacksons) at Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City. Or arrange to attend the all-strings version of Bach’s Goldberg Variations by the Portland Baroque Orchestra, also in Lincoln City. How’s that for variety?

Here’s even more spice for your life: This month you’ll find the Fire it Up BBQ cook-off competition and the Cool at the Coast Summer Golf Spectacular in Florence; Comedy on the Coast and the Run for fun at the Ocean’s Edge 5K run/walk in Lincoln City; a crafts fair in Gleneden Beach; a Fair & Rodeo in Newport; the Toledo Summer Festival celebrating the coastal logging tradition in Toledo; the Lower Umpqua Gem and Lapidary Society Annual Show and free outdoor concerts in Reedsport, and a cornucopia of farmers markets up and down the coast!

Feel like horsing around on the beach? Well, giddy-up, cowpokes! Experienced guides and trained horses are available for beach rides at equestrian centers in Nehalem, Cannon Beach, Lincoln City, Florenceand Pistol River. Or saddle up, all you pedal-pusher enthusiasts, for bicycle excursions around Newport, Lincoln City or the Three Capes Scenic Loop near Pacific City. And if you get tired out, the Sea Haven Guest House in Rockaway Beach & Bike Newport in Newport offers bicycle friendly accommodations to pump up your energy level.

Are you on board for some action-packed adventures in the great outdoors? Roll into summer at skate parks in Toledo, Waldport, Cannon Beach, Seaside and Newport. Join the Sand Master Jam sandboard competitions in Florence. Learn to surf and ocean kayak in Newport . Explore Tillamook by kayak on Kayak Tillamook’s Treasure Map Tour or stand up paddle the Yaquina River in Toledo.

If you prefer a more cultured approach to your coastal excursions, try Tillamook Cheese in Tillamook for some delicious, hand-crafted cheese, fudge and ice cream. Enjoy a live theater performance in Lincoln City or a free bus tour of art galleries in Florence. Sit down to a masterfully prepared dining experience at the Chef’s Culinary Institute in Coos Bay. Or celebrate “America the Beautiful” at art galleries and a free concert in Toledo.

What’s that you say? You’re looking for an entirely new point of view to help lift the constraints on your perspectives? Well, things are looking up. Try a romantic sunset helicopter tour for two with the Land, Sea & Air Package available from Driftwood Shores in Florence. Take off on your own flights of fancy while hiking the beach and digging the views from the dog-friendly Silver Surf Motel in Yachats. Or enjoy s’mores and more with the Beach Campfire Package at Inn at Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City.

On The People’s Coast, you’ll always find an opportunity to celebrate your independent freedom of choice.

Here’s a powerful suggestion. If you’ve had a real blast on The People’s Coast, share your stories with us online, on Facebook or on Twitter. And wow us with the power of your experience.
