WADE RIGHT IN! - Oregon Coast Visitors Association

Posted by OCVA / May 31, 2011

Had a long, cold, lonely winter? Well, little darlin’, here comes some good news for a change. It’s June on The People’s Coast, and it’s the perfect month to kick off those galoshes, forget your winter cares and woes, head for the sun and wiggle your toes!

We’ve got jamborees and clamborees. Scenic tours on bikes and a festival of kites. Sand dune races and leisurely paces. Food, art, music and dance. So head for the Oregon Coast, wade into a fresh adventure and rediscover your sunny disposition!

Has the family been clamoring for something to do? Then head over to Coos Bay/North Bend, where this month you’ll discover such entertaining options as a “Clamboree,” an RV Jamboree, a Harley Davidson lighthouse run, a museum exhibit of classic “hogs” and motorcycle-related artwork and the “Sandfest 2011” dune competitions.

How about the Rail Jam at Sand Master Park in Florence, the inaugural Celtic Festival in Newport, the Scandinavian Festival in Astoria, Sandcastle Day in Cannon Beach, Beachcomber Days in Waldport, the Chainsaw Sculpting Championships in Reedsport, the annual Yappy Days event in Pacific City, a free fishing weekend in Coquille or the Summer Kite Festival in Lincoln City? They’re all certain to lift your spirits.

And, ahoy matey, why spend a lovely June afternoon holed up in some multiplex watching Johnny Depp chew up the scenery when you could set a course for Rockaway Beach and attend an actual Pirate Festival? Yar!

Take your pick of 14 different farmers’ and artisans’ markets up and down the coast this month. Explore art walks and exhibits in Brookings, Coos Bay , Toledo and Lincoln City. Dig into tasteful delights at the Culinary Institute in Coos Bay or some sinfully rich fudge in Bandon. Take Hawaiian and Italian small plates cooking classes or a hands-on strawberry canning class in Lincoln City.

If all that talk about food makes you feel like maybe you should get up off your can and move a little, we’ve got plenty of ways to exercise your options. Hit your stride in Coos Bay on a four-acre hike along the Oregon Coast Trail or on a three-mile hike through an old-growth forest in Coquille. Look into South Slough birding or explore Shore Acres Park in Charleston. Stroll through the Darlingtonia rare plant sanctuary in Florence or the lavender labyrinth garden in Bandon.

If you like your greens manicured, get around to playing the Sunset Bay Golf Course in Charleston or the Watson Ranch course in Coos Bay. And if all that’s still not enough to tire you out, sign up for Pedal Bike Tours’ Oregon Coast Adventure, a 10-mile sightseeing tour of Three Capes Loop in the Tillamook area.

Let’s not forget about petal power either. The Oregon Coast Gardening & Landscaping Expo in Newport will blossom with plant sellers, landscaping seminars and master gardener classes. Lincoln City is hosting their annual Secret Garden Tour, while the Oregon Rose Society is sponsoring an exhibit in North Bend. And don’t you dare overlook ol’ Dad this month: take him over to Charleston for Rose Sunday Father’s Day at Shore Acres.

What, still not enough? Try “Rock’n the Coast” at Newport for an informal education about rocks, minerals and fossils. Catch a soulful solo performance by Aaron Lewis of Staind or enjoy at night of comedy at Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City.

Like the feel of a winning deal? You’ll enjoy special rates and package deals this month at Microtel Inn & Suites in Seaside, Inn at Spanish Head in Lincoln City, the Whaler in Newport, the Fireside Motel in Yachats and the Surfsand Resort in Cannon Beach. Doggone it! We almost forgot about Fido. You’ll have no trouble sniffing out pet-friendly accommodations at in Waldport, Rogue Public House in Newport, Coho Oceanfront Lodge in Lincoln City or the Inn at Cape Kiwanda and Shore Pines Vacation Rentals in Pacific City.

And, finally, if you’re looking for a different kind of dogleg, drive over to the Mill Casino Hotel & RV Park for their special Golfer’s Getaway Package. Fore real!

Have a favorite beach on the Oregon Coast? A newly discovered view, favorite out-of-the-way restaurant or surprising beachcombing discovery? Share your experiences with us online, on Facebook or via Twitter. You could make a big splash with your friends and neighbors!

Looking for the perfect place to get your feet wet on The People’s Coast? Then wade into our Mile by Mile Guide. You’ll find everything you need to plan for and enjoy an outstanding “Adventurecation.” And it’s always free for the asking.
