SPRING FORWARD! - Oregon Coast Visitors Association

Posted by OCVA / February 22, 2011

Sure, there’s nothing more rousing than a winter storm on the coast, but if you’re like us – and we know that you are – you’ve been looking forward to spring for a few weeks now. Well, it’s finally on the horizon, and to celebrate, we’re designating March as Family Fun Month on The People’s Coast! It’s time to make your spring break.

As you look forward to setting your clocks ahead this month, we’re cooking up a boatload of ways to make you feel that you’ve turned back the hands of time. Just for starters, we’ve got cooking competitions for chefs and amateur chefs in Lincoln City and Newport. You can rejuvenate your family spirits with a drive on the wild side at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area in North Bend or become the master of your domain by taking advantage of the Two for Tuesday sandboarding specials at Sand Master Park in Florence.

Join us in Newport for the annual Blessing of the Fleet, with a parade of vessels and competitions in crab pot stacking, net mending, coiling and other fishing-related contests. Pick up your esprit de corps by joining in the Great Oregon Beach Cleanup at beaches up and down the coast. Applaud the celebration of Bach’s Birthday in Coos Bay or take in the annual Home & Garden Show in Florence.

Learn how to fly kites without so much as a stiff breeze at the Indoor Kite Festival in Lincoln City. Go with the flow in Astoria with the Rogue Ale Pier Tour, featuring “a view of the Columbia from inside the Columbia” and, gulp, “a secret ladder into the water.” Hobnob with artists at an after-hours party at the Backstreet Gallery in Florence, or become fluent in whale speak during Whale Watch Week in Coos Bay.

Keep careful watch and you could spot one of the hundreds of hand-crafted glass floats placed along the beach in Gold Beach and Lincoln City. And here’s a fetching offer for the four-legged members of your family: This month, the Rogue Ales Bayfront Pub in Newport is offering a canine gourmet menu especially for Fido. And he won’t have to beg for a doggie bag!

Fishing for more? The Inn at Spanish Head in Lincoln City is offering a package that includes lodging, dinner and tickets for the Oregon Coast Aquarium – and kids under 16 stay free. Don’t discount the other special offers in Lincoln City, where you’ll find a Family Fun Package at the Inn at Wecoma and Family Fireside or Beach Bonfire packages at the Coho Oceanfront Lodge. Book a stay at a participating property in the Coos Bay, North Bend and Charleston areas and you’ll get more than $500 in Coastal Adventure Coupons. And there’s still time to take advantage of the winter storm watching special at Land’s End Motel in Cannon Beach.

Spring is in the air, and we all look forward to welcoming your entire family to a well-deserved break on The People’s Coast!
