Every moment spent on the Oregon Coast is memorable and special and magical. This past summer I traveled to the coast with my sister, her boyfriend and children for both a vacation and a book promotion trip for my first novel. I was so excited to take them out on the Discovery Tours boat ride out of Newport. My niece and nephew had been out with me once before a few years ago, but we had not been lucky enough to see a whale. As we boarded the boat I crossed my fingers and prayed that we would see a whale this trip. The water was a bit rougher than my last two trips and the sky was overcast. It was perfect and my heart soared along as I kept my eyes on the surface of the water, searching for any sign of a whale. I kept thinking how amazing it would be to see one and how awesome it would be to share it with my family. There is nothing like seeing a whale for the first time, it is a powerful and emotional experience that I’d only had once before while in Depoe Bay onshore. Seeing a whale out in the open ocean would be a dream come true. It wasn’t long before the Captain said someone had spotted a whale. He drove the boat to an area where he thought we would see it surface a safe distance away. Well, the whale had other plans…it surfaced right next to the boat!!! It was incredible. The look on my family’s faces was sheer joy and excitement. I will never forget that moment as long as I live. The whale continued to move around the boat surfacing again and again for a photo op. It was obviously as interested in us as we were in it. I cannot wait for my next trip. This time I may actually take my husband.
