THE DICKENS YOU SAY! - Oregon Coast Visitors Association

Posted by OCVA / November 29, 2010

You say your Holiday Spirits at present seem like mere apparitions of memories past? That you’re feeling as “solitary as an oyster” trapped in a Bleak House with no Great Expectations for the holiday yet to come? Humbug!

As Dickens wrote in “A Christmas Carol,” “If the courses be departed from, the ends will change.” So chart a course for The People’s Coast this month. We’ve got enough bright lights, festive sites and tasty delights to warm the cockles of any Scrooge’s shriveled heart.

And if all that’s still not enough to put the jingle back in your bells, remember, Ebenezer: December is also the start of Dungeness crab season on the Oregon Coast, so you’ll find yourself in very good company indeed.

And talk about a Tale of Two Cities! Special thanks to every one who voted for Newport’s Yaquina Head Lighthouse as the starting point of the CBS Early Show’s “No Way Home.” Anchorage managed to eke out a win, but, eek – they’re in Alaska, and we’re here on The People’s Coast, where every one will feel right at home!

Looking for a dazzle of holiday lights? Oh buoy, do we have lights! The annual Lighted Boat Parade in Newport features a festooned flotilla of fishing boats, sailboats and passenger-licensed craft. The Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport is decked out in a winter wonderland of twinkling lights and festive carolers. Shore Acres State Park, near Coos Bay, adorns its 7-acre botanical garden with an amazing display of bulbs. And you’ll find yourself beaming at the Heceta Head Lighthouse Victorian Christmas event in Florence.

Want an old-fashioned holiday experience? Well, hey, how about this? You’ll have a Dickens of a time in Old Town Florence, with hayrides, a Victorian costume dance and a Christmas choral event. Astoria will be staging live performances of “A Christmas Carol” and “The Nutcracker” and, bless us every one, even the Flavel House will be serving up plum pudding and holiday tea. Or train your eyes on the miniature display of Oregon’s coastal fishing villages and small towns at the Christmas Train Display in Charleston.

In a giving mood? You’ll find a fine selection of unique handcrafted stocking stuffers at the Holiday Bazaar in Reedsport or Starving Artist Faire and Art Walk afoot this month in Astoria. Looking ahead, you can make plans now to be in Astoria for the upcoming Scandinavian New Year’s Eve Celebration or all-ages Sane & Sober Party.

You don’t have to stay at home to feel at home for the holidays. This month, Sea-Nik Vacation Rentals in Yachats is offering three for two specials at several of its homes. Enjoy a third night free at the oceanfront Surfsand Resort or the Winter Storm Watching Special at Land’s End Motel in Cannon Beach. Or cozy up to the Holiday Package at the Inn at Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City.

Wondering where the best spots are on The People’s Coast for whale watching? Looking for a hiking trail on a path less taken? Get your free copy of our Mile-by-Mile Guide to the Oregon Coast. It’ll make you wonder what else you’ve been missing.

Ever had yourself a merry little holiday on The People’s Coast? Well, don’t keep it to yourself. Unwrap those memories and share your story online. You could win a fabulous gift, and give yourself something to sing about!
