Posted by OCVA / October 1, 2010

Fed up with a steady diet of the same old – same old? Hungry for a little more spice in your life? Hankering for a taste of something different? Have we got a treat for you!

October is Oregon Bounty month on The People’s Coast, where every day serves up a fresh new feast for the senses. This month, we’re stuffed to the gills with a bountiful selection of gastronomic events and special offers. Chowder and blues festivals, fall harvest celebrations, cheese and wine samplings, and tasty discounts on tasteful lodgings. If that whets your appetite, you’ll find the perfect place setting right here on the Oregon Coast.

How’s this for starters? In Charleston, the “Octoberfish” Festival serves up a heaping portion of family fun, including local bands, children’s activities and fresh tuna dinners. Shake off your blues in Florence at the annual Fall Chowder, Blues & Brews Festival featuring live music, Northwest microbrews and a chowder cook-off. And, not to be outdone, Cannon Beach is firing up the rotisseries and grills for a 5-course Fall Harvest Fest Dinner paired with regional brews.

Don’t forget to think outside the takeout box. Sample Oregon wines and great food at the Wine & Dine at the Dunes event at Ocean Dunes Golf Links in Florence. Stroll through Coos Bay for the First Friday Wine Walk or Downtown Farmer’s Market. Dig into the best of locally grown and raised foods while learning the secrets of great cooking at The Culinary Center in Lincoln City. Experience the traditional flavors of Oregon’s Native American tribes at the Rez Kitchen Tour event, a 2-day culinary competition in North Bend.

Hungry for more? Best bring your appetite. A tour of the Tillamook Cheese Factory offers a whey cool experience, including a chance to sample the winning “best medium cheddar” of the World Championship Cheese Contest. Chow down on “the best clam chowder anywhere” during the Chowder Bounty Promotion in the Coos Bay area.

If you have a taste for the unusual, visit Astoria this month for a Haunted Astoria tour and a killer performance of “Arsenic and Old Lace.” Catch the wind and the spectacular aerodynamics on display at the Fall Kite Festival in Lincoln City, where flyers will join in a grid flight of multiple Quadline kites. And if your body stages a mutiny on all the bounty you’ve consumed, waddle over to Astoria and burn some calories at the annual 10K Great Columbia Crossing over the Astoria-Megler Bridge.

Can’t resist a great deal? Odds are good you’ll enjoy the special rates, senior discounts and free casino shuttle service available with the Gambler’s Special at Liberty Inn in Lincoln City. You can pamper yourself and your best gal pal with a special Girls’ Getaway Package at the Overleaf Lodge & Spa in Yachats. And you’d have to be a real chowderhead not to take advantage of the $50 in free dining certificates available from participating hotels and restaurants during the Coos Bay Chowder Bounty Promotion.

Enjoy a roaring fire, fresh baked cookies, spectacular views and a free third night at The Ocean Lodge in Cannon Beach. Or share the bounty with others: Just donate a can of food for Lincoln County Food Share and harvest discounts of up to 40% at either the Fireside Motel or Overleaf Lodge & Spa in Yachats.

Fall Kite Festival in Lincoln City

Kite fliers from across the Northwest will be gathered at the D-River Wayside on for the 32nd Annual Fall Kite Festival in Lincoln City. A celebration of both professional and leisure kite fliers with some of the most colorful big “show kites” in the world. The featured fliers at the festival will demonstrate their flying skills throughout the weekend. Team iQuad will be the center of attention with their Rev quad-line kites. At the festival we will have a mega fly of Quadline kites. If you have always wanted to fly in a grid, this is your chance. We will also “mic” the lead kiteflier, John Barresi so the audience will have a chance to experience how the grid is worked! It should be a lot of fun to see all the kites in the sky at the same time! During the summer festival we had a 29 kite grid. Let’s see if we can make it bigger!
Dale Ray along with Dave & Susan Gomberg will display the “big” stuff, while Jerimy Colbert will fly deltas. The 2010 Kite Festival theme is “Quadzilla”. Persons that fly in our grid will be entered in a drawing to win a signature glass float, compliments of the Lincoln City Visitor & Convention Bureau. The winner will be announced at the end of each day of the festival. Scheduled activities will include kite making for kids, a kid’s parade, Quadline mega fly and Rok Battle.
