OUT AND ABOUT! - Oregon Coast Visitors Association

Posted by OCVA / July 27, 2010

Whether you’re an innie or an outie by nature, it’s about time to stop navel gazing and put some oomph back in your life right here in the great omphalos of The People’s Coast.

Don’t look now, but summer’s already starting to slip away. It’s about time to get up from the couch, out of the house, away from it all and off to the beach! If that sounds like a perfect proposition of prepositions, we’ve got the perfect place for you this month: the Oregon Coast!

Want an out-of-this-world experience? We can float a few ideas for you. How about hang gliding lessons over quiet sand dunes and rain-forested mountains from Oregon Hang Gliding in Pacific City? Or a three-mile excursion to the Pacific Ocean on the Siltcoos River Canoe Trail in Florence? We can get on board with that. Canoe?

You want festive? We’ve got festive! Astoria is hosting “Five Festive Days of Fun” on the mighty Columbia River, with sailboat races, nightly concerts and a salmon BBQ. There’s buckets of fun to be had at the annual Sand Castle Contest in Lincoln City, and they’ll be going to extreme lengths to entertain at the sandboard jump competition at the Xwest Huck Fest at Sand Master Park in Florence. Or, hay – check out the 4-H exhibits, talent shows and more than your fair amount of fun at Astoria’s Clatsop County Fair. Just don’t mention the BBQ dinner to any of the livestock. They may have a beef with that.

How tweet is this? Folks will be flocking to the Oregon Shorebird Festival in Charleston to observe the natural wonders of shorebird migrations, with guided field trips in the Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge and other birding areas. Or set off on your own with a guidebook and binoculars for a peep at the 173 birding hotspots along the Oregon Coast Birding Trail. The Sooty-footed Shearwater will be there, how about you?

So why the long face? This month you could be horsing around enjoying 17 miles of spectacular vistas at Coast Horse Trails in the Siuslaw National Forest north of Florence. BYOH? You can check Ol’ Paint into his very own stall at the Crazy A’s Horse Hotel in Cloverdale which is near Pacific City, and is situated within 15 miles of some of the best riding spots on the coast. They even serve fresh spring water. What, you think we’re pulling your leg? Nay!

Want s’more? The Inn at Cape Kiwanda is offering a Campfire Package complete with a bundle of firewood and all the fixins for S’mores on the beach in Pacific City. Hook a special Summer Golf Package at Salishan Spa & Golf Resort near Lincoln City. And don’t discount this month’s special rates at The Whaler Motel in Newport, the Sea Spirit House Bed & Breakfast in Yachats or the Alsea River RV Park & Marina in Waldport.

You see, life’s never far out of sight on The People’s Coast.

Had an out-of-this world experience on The People’s Coast? Don’t keep it bottled up! Share your Stories of the great outdoors with us online. You can win a four-hour kayak rental from Wheel Fun Rentals, along with a bicycle tour for four from Tom’s Tours, both in Seaside. Wheelie, you can!
