HERE COMES THE SUN! - Oregon Coast Visitors Association

Posted by OCVA / May 25, 2010

Had a long, cold, lonely winter? Here’s your spot to shine!

June is bustin’ out all over on The People’s Coast. And as Rogers and Hammerstein wrote, “June makes the bay look bright and new / Sails gleaming bright on sunlit blue.” So shake yourself awake from your long repose, kick up your heels and expose those toes! We’re bustin’ at the seams with events, activities and special deals this month, and it’s got nothing to do with all those extra pounds we packed on over the winter. Come thick or come thin, June is the perfect month to play, sashay and stay on the Oregon Coast.

Cabin fever got you feeling bored and crazy? Then you’ll find yourself in perfect company at the Pistol River Wave Bash in Gold Beach, the “most insane sailing and wind surfing contest” in the nation. Wash away those cares and woes with standup paddle-boarding at Devil’s Lake or Siletz Bay in Lincoln City. Hop in a buggy and hit the dunes for a scenic tour or hair-raising thrill ride in Florence.

Miss the feeling of sand between your toes? Dig the hundreds of elaborate sand sculptures and drawings taking shape during the west coast’s largest sandcastle contest in Cannon Beach. Master your domain by competing in the Sand Master Jam sandboard contest in Florence or the adult and youth beach soccer tournaments in Seaside. Or take those toes for a leisurely stroll on the beach at the South Jetty Day Use Area.

Now picture this: you can enjoy a red-carpet experience touring original film locations and hobnobing with original cast members during the four-day 25th anniversary celebration of the cult classic “Goonies” in Astoria. Shop ‘til you drop at the Farmers & Crafters Market or reel in a special summer deal at the Tanger Outlet Center in Lincoln City. And if a day of shopping leaves ol’ Pop feeling a little deflated motor over to the Oregon Coast Exotic Car Show in Gleneden Beach. That should get his motor running again.

Looking for some hot fun, and some hot deals, in the summertime? Make a sly move with the Inn at Cape Kiwanda’s “Bag It at the Beach” package for an ocean-view room and everything you’ll need for a picnic on the shore in Pacific City. Head to the Harbor Lights Inn at Depoe Bay for a 50 percent room discount that includes breakfast. Plug in to one of the full-service RV sites with ocean views in Winchester Bay. And don’t miss the special savings available at the Overleaf Lodge & Spa in Yachats and Sea Horse Oceanfront Lodging in Lincoln City this month.

If it’s time to recapture your sunny disposition and it feels like years since you’ve been here, June is the perfect time to rediscover your inner glow on The People’s Coast.

SUN, SUN, SUN . . .

Here it comes, our monthly pitch encouraging you to share your stories of adventure with all the little darlings who visit the Oregon Coast online. We’ve all had some toe-curling moments in the sun. So why keep yours a secret? Trust us: It’s alright. We’re willing to share it with all.

46th Annual Sandcastle Day in Cannon Beach

Throughout the morning of the contest hundreds of sand sculptures, castles, and drawings are painstakingly constructed from the “singing sands” on the Cannon Beach shore. Sandcastle masters begin their construction at 9:00am with all others digging in at 10:00am. After all of the awards are presented, the sand art can be viewed until about 3:00pm when the incoming tide will require that all cars move off the beach – or go out sea. Those staying for the weekend might want to enjoy the beach a bit longer and watch as the ocean reclaims these wondrous works at high tide.
