Whale Watching and More! The People’s Coast Newsletter for March, 2009.

Spending time with your family and friends is what spring break on the Oregon coast is all about. Walking the beach, browsing quaint shops, eating great seafood, and watching a sunset from oceanfront lodging are just some of the things you can do on the 363 miles of The People’s Coast this spring break. To help plan your next visit, here is some coastal information that will make you a coastal trivia whiz!

The largest population center is Oregon’s Bay Area including Coos Bay and North Bend with a total population of 25,000. Brookings–Harbor follows with 14,000, then Astoria and Newport each about 10,000, and Lincoln City and Florence each just over 7000.

Garibaldi, Winchester Bay, and Charleston continue to be small fishing villages offering deep sea fishing trips for halibut and tuna. Other towns have their specialties too. Lincoln City has the most lodgings, Depoe Bay is known for its whale watching trips, Reedsport is the Heart of the Oregon Dunes, Gold Beach is home base for the Rogue River—famous for fishing and jet boat rides and Tillamook for its Tillamook Cheese and ice cream.

Favorite sights include Seaside’s 2-mile beachside Promenade; Cannon Beach’s Haystack Rock; Pacific City’s dory boat fishermen launching directly into the surf; Lincoln City’s 65-store Tanger Outlets; Newport’s historic Nye Beach and Bayfront; Florence’s Old Town; Bandon’s scenic offshore rocks; Port Orford’s boat lifts lowering and raising boats in and out of the water and Yachats for the scenic views from the Cape Perpetua area.

Casinos also count as longtime favorite places to visit: Chinook Winds Casino and Convention Center in Lincoln City, The Mill Casino Hotel in the Coos Bay Area, and Three Rivers Casino in Florence.
