Indoor Kite Festival

Plan on attending Oregon’s best Indoor Kite Festival in Lincoln City! Yes, it’s true. If you have the right kite and know how to do it, you can fly kites indoors without wind—and have great fun even if the weather outside is frightful!

So everyone can enjoy this great sport, Lincoln City is bringing expert indoor kite fliers from the Northwest, to demonstrate the art and teach kids of all ages how to soar without wind.

The Indoor Kite Festival will culminate with an American Kitefliers Association Indoor Competition on Saturday. Trophies will be awarded for the top three finishers in both Master and Experienced divisions. Where: Taft High School – 3780 SE Spyglass Ridge Drive Directions: Come to High School Drive, at the Lincoln City Cinemas and in the 3800 SE area, and turn east. Drive one block to Spyglass Drive and turn left. Summer Kite Festival

Lincoln City, named by Kitelines Magazine as one of the best placesto fly kites in North America, celebrates with three kite festivals each year, two outdoors and one indoors. Situated on the 45th parallel, Lincoln City is positioned at the ideal point for mixing warm equatorial air and cold polar air, which creates ideal winds for outdoor flying. In addition, the clean air flowing directly off the ocean is preferred by kite flying experts, and novices will see a difference in their abilities as well.

The 28th Annual Summer Kite Festival, will be held June 23rd & 24th, 2012 at the D-River State Wayside from 10am to 4pm.

Kite-flying demonstrations, kid’s events, kite-making workshops, running of the Bols and more!

Lady Washington in Newport

The tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain will bring one-of-a-kind living history experiences next month when the ships visit Newport. The vessels have scheduled Battle Sails, Adventure Sails, tours for the general public, and educational programs for K-12 school groups.

Battle Sails at 2pm on April 9 and 10 – These exciting excursions feature booming cannon and tight maneuvers that recall the naval skirmishes of the Napoleonic Wars. Tickets are $60 adults, $50 students/seniors/active military, $40 children 12 and under. Advance reservations are strongly recommended.

Adventure sail 10 a.m. April 10, and 2 p.m. April 16 – A family-oriented experience with a chance for guests to help sail the ship that appeared in the 2003 movie Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Tickets for the April 10 sail are just $35. Tickets for the April 16 sail are $55 adults, $45 students/seniors/active military, $35 children 12 and under.

Walk-on tours: April 9-10, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; April 12-15, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.; April 16, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A $3 donation per person is appreciated.

Brewers’ Memorial Ale Fest

The 5th Annual Brewers Memorial Ale Fest will be held in Newport and will benefit the Central Coast Humane Society and Oregon Coast Therapy Animals.

Last year 3,200 people and 810 of their best friends attended the festival. The festival was created in memory of Rogue Brewmaster John Maier’s faithful companion Brewer, who passed away on May 20, 2006. Brewer grew up in the brewery and eventually rose to the rank of CEO of Rogue Ales.

The dog-friendly brew festival is held inside the Rogue Ales Brewery and includes 50+ Microbreweries, Live Music, Doggy Musical Chairs, Dog Wash, Dog Dancing and Celebrity dog look-alikes (Rin-Tin-Tin, Lassie, Benjy and of course, Brewer).

Brookings Audubon Birding Excursion

The Kalmiopsis Audubon Society leads a birding excursion each month from March through October. Participation is free, no birding experience necessary, and experts are welcome to share their knowledge. Binoculars are recommended, and trips are weather-dependent. Times for carpooling vary each month, so call to confirm.
