Amazing Race 109

(Newport, Oregon) – On July 30, the streets of Newport’s Bayfront district will be abuzz with the 6th Annual Amazing Race. As in years past, challenges will be both mental and physical, with two-person teams racing through Newport to cross the finish line. Modeled after the popular television show, the Amazing Race will have each team following clues and problems – all on the run.

Participants do not know whether they’re running, walking, boating, biking or scheming to get to their goal. No one knows what the obstacles will be as well. All they know is that it’s a scavenger-style race with challenges that may be mental, physical or both. The race has a Newport theme, so each of the challenges will be centered on something “Newport-ish,” as co-organizer Bobbi Price called it.

The Newport Young Professionals holds the event on that Saturday, where a $100 cash prize will be awarded to the team that finishes first from each category. Prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the race and complimentary food and beverages provided to all participants, volunteers and sponsors.

This year’s course happens primarily in the historic Bayfront district of Newport, with both the start and finish line at Rogue Ales. The course will be approximately three miles with seven challenge stops along the way.

Registration is capped at 40 teams (80 people), said Price. Teams are comprised of two people.

“In years past we have had many locals participate in the Amazing Race and we also have several people coming from all over the state,” said Price. “Both locals and visitors of Newport will have fun participating in this event.”

If you’re interested in watching the spectacle, you are urged to first come to the historic Bayfront at the race’s start. Viewing the race is a bit tricky and takes some sleuthing.

“We will give them ideas of viewing spots once the participants have begun,” Price said. “Due to the scavenger hunt style of the race, watchers are generally the ‘cheering crowd’ made up of family and friends of the participants. The race will draw a crowd as participants complete challenges but because the challenges are kept secret, there are no designated viewing spots.”

Details: Saturday, July 30, 2016, check-in starts at 8:00 a.m. Starts at the Rogue Ales Bayfront Pub in Newport, with seven secret locations to find and  challenges to complete. Complete each challenge and receive a clue to the next location.
