Pacific City Birding and Blues Festival – April 29 – May 1, 2016
The Birding and Blues Festival returns to Pacific City the weekend of April 29-May 1. The 2016 festival will offer fan-favorite field trips and brand new excursions as well! The weekend begins with classic Birding & Blues activities including a free community open house on Friday April 29th featuring a live seabird presentation and a children’s art activity.
Brand new this year is an excursion on Friday called the Pioneer Trail Tour. Attendees will explore historic, pioneer roads through portions of the Siuslaw Forest. The trip is led by local birders and will combine birding and biology. Expect to see ruffed grouse, red-breasted sapsuckers, Wilson’s warblers and American dippers.
Regional birding experts will lead field trips to popular natural areas including Neskowin Marsh and Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge. There will be activities for all skill levels from beginning identification to learning the specialized talent of birding by ear. New field trips include: seabird watching, a visit to the Pixieland restoration area, a coastal woodland walkabout, a wrackline walk, and the eagerly anticipated evening owl prowl.
Avian researcher John Marzluff is the 2016 keynote speaker. Professor Marzluff will present his most recent book Welcome to Suburbia which describes how suburban neighborhoods host a splendid array of biological diversity and suggests ways in which we can steward these resources to benefit birds and ourselves.
The fun continues into the night when the town comes alive with the sound of Blues. There will be concerts on both Friday and Saturday evenings at the Kiawanda Community Center which offers an intimate setting for enjoying music “up close and personal” and dancing like a crazy bird. The festival welcomes Franco Paletta & the Stingers as its headlining band playing on Saturday night, April 30th from 8:00pm – 11:00 PM. On Friday night we feature The Rockhounds from 8 – 11 PM. Concerts are all ages, children ages 6 and under will have a $10.00 admission; all other ages are $15.00. Tickets can be bought in advance on our website or at the door.
The festival welcomes everyone to attend our two free community events on Friday, April 29th. It begins with a presentation at the Kiawanda Community Center when the Wildlife Center of the North Coast talks about seabirds and our oceans and will showcase a few of their non-releasable rehabilitated seabirds. Following this is a pub talk at The Pelican Pub & Brewery from 6:00 – 8:00pm titled “Pelican Travels, Tribulations and Social Networking” presented by independent wildlife biologist Deborah Jaques.
