Cannon Beach’s Race the Wave 5K run raises awareness of Oregon tsunami preparedness

Oregon congressional representative Suzanne Bonamici spoke with participants at the event about the importance of having a family emergency plan and knowing tsunami evacuation routes.

About 100 runners took to the streets of Cannon Beach Sunday as part of theĀ Race the Wave 5K run to raise awareness about the threat of tsunamis along the Oregon Coast.

The first-time event, which began on the beach and progressed along evacuation routes to higher ground, included educational material designed to inform participants about the danger posed by the Cascadia Subduction Zone, which can cause significant earthquakes with enough power to trigger a tsunami.
