Tenor Guitar Gathering returns to Astoria June 5-8

The 5th Annual Tenor Guitar Gathering (TGG5) returns again to Astoria June 5-8, 2014 from the east to the west side with unique musical events which includes four evenings of musical performances by over a dozen tenor guitar virtuosos from all over the country. You can attend one concert or all four for just $60.00!  That’s 13 musicians and 12 hours of music! TGG5 kicks off Thursday June 5th with a meet and greet jam session from 9:00am to Noon at The Coffee Girl inside Pier 39. Then from 7 to 10pm at the Rogue Banquet Room the first concert of the weekend performs featuring Carl Allen and An Evening of Woody Guthrie.

On Friday and Saturday June 6th & 7th from 7 to 10pm with doors opening at 6:30pm, the “AN EVENING OF TENOR GUITARS” returns to the ASOC Playhouse 129 West Bond Street with over a dozen Tenor Guitarists performing the night away! This amazing concert series is just $20 per evening and part of the funds raised goes towards helping the Astor Street Opry Company community theatre organization and local Public Radio staion KMUN.

Friday night performers includes: Carl Allen, Jean Mann, Professor Douglas Fraser, Jimmie Dodd, Jeff Gatten, and Erich Sylvester will perform songs on tenor guitars once owned by Jimmie Dodd. While Saturday musicians on stage will feature: Tom Molyneaux with Mark Josephs, EZ Marc Poschman, John Lawlor, Jerry Thomasson and Tim May.

The final “Fiddle Jam” concert in this packed weekend is just a $15 entrance on Sunday Night June 8th, 7 to 10pm at the Rogue Public Ale House Banquet Room on Pier 39 on east end of Astoria with Stephen Schauer & Friends. You don’t even have to know how to play tenor guitar; all instruments are welcome.

This jam packed weekend will also feature the chance to learn from some of the world’s leading tenor guitar artists and masters at the Rogue Alehouse Banquet Room on Pier 39 starting Saturday June 6th at 9:30am with “How to Build a Cigar Box Guitar”. For just $60 this specialized session includes instruction by Alan Matta and Bill Styler and materials. Then starting at 2:00pm Mark Josephs will teach a “Very Beginner Workshop in Tenor Guitar” for $25 followed up with “Tenor Guitar Triads & Ukes in 5ths” workshop from 3:00pm for just $30 which includes 27 page booklet and audio CD. At 4:00pm John Lawlor will lead a “Jazz Chord Workshop” for $25 where you can learn how to go about creating your own chord melodies.

On Sunday May 8th  workshops beginat 10:30am you’ll have the chance to work with “master of the strings” Tim May one of the most sought after players in Nashville,  for just $30. Then enjoy the “Texas Tenor Guitar Fiddle Back Up” workshop with awarding winning performers Stephen Schauer and Pat Mac Swyney.

Other Events include: Friday 11am to Noon, “Sing and Play on The Astoria Riverfront Trolley” Meet in front of the Bridgewater Bistro 10:45am sharp and just $1 to ride the trolley one way, or $2 for all day! Then at Noon enjoy a fine Lunch upstairs at The Bridgewater Bistro with live Tenor  Guitar Music by Jazz Chord Virtuoso John Lawlor!(order off the lunch menu, separate checks okay, $5.00 cover charge and 18% gratuity will be included.)
