Destination Gold Beach — October’s Sunny Spot
On the Southern Oregon Coast, summery weather can stretch through October, so now’s the perfect time to explore Gold Beach. Named for the gold rush that drew prospectors in the 1880s, Gold Beach is the coastal gateway to the Wild and Scenic Rogue River and offers miles of unspoiled, wind-swept beaches.
Running River: Experience the Rogue and catch a glimpse of eagles, otters, bears and other wildlife on a late-season jet boat run or white-water rafting trip. Salmon were once so plentiful along this stretch of river that their spawning was said to spook local horses. Reel in a chinook of your own on a guided fishing trip, or visit Fishermen Direct Seafood for all manner of fresh, smoked, frozen or canned local fish and seafood.
Trails and Trees: If you’d rather keep your feet on dry land, hiking around Gold Beach is plentiful — from the Francis Schrader Old Growth Trail (an easy loop through lush woods) to the Cape Sebastian headlands with panoramic views. Hug a 13-foot round myrtle tree on the Myrtle Tree Trail, home of the world’s largest specimen. Or don a pair of waterproof shoes and explore the tide pools at Agate Beach or Lone Ranch Wayside. (For myrtlewood to take home, visit Rogue River Myrtlewood Shop for artisan cutting boards and hand-turned bowls crafted from the South Coast’s native tree.)
New Brews: Stop in for a sip at Arch Rock Brewing Company’s tasting room. This one- year-old brewery is already making a name for itself, having collecting a 2013 North American Brewers Association gold medal for its State of Jefferson Porter.
Relax and refresh: Enjoy shoulder season rates at the luxurious Tu Tu’ Tun Lodge. Located seven miles upriver from Gold Beach, Tu Tu’ Tun consistently appears on Conde Nast’s Gold List of the world’s best places to stay, and it’s easy to see why. Breathtaking views of the Rogue, mouthwatering breakfasts and Japanese soaking tubs are among the deluxe amenities that beckon.
No matter what you’re seeking, you’re sure to strike it rich in Gold Beach.
