Rockaway Beach Kite Festival

Posted by OCVA / May 12, 2012

Thirty-eight kite-flying professionals will take over the skies of Rockaway Beach the second weekend in May. Come join in the fun – there will be kite flying, kite making and maybe even a chance to dance in the sand! The weekend is about kites, large and small. There will be ballet kites dancing to music; box, dual line and multi-line kites; quick, maneuverable sport kites; fighting rokkaku kites and kites the size of a school bus (so we are told)!

Be a part of “history in the making” at the Rockaway Beach Kite Festival with the unveiling of Russ and Diane Little’s newest kite. This unique kite is the only one of its kind in the US and it will be making its debut in Rockaway Beach as the kite season blows into town.

Besides Kite Flying, activities will include

• Bull Racing
Compete together in a “Bull” race, where participants line up at the start, and race pulling a “bull”, which is round, like an umbrella. As you run across the field of sand, the bull opens up, catches air and works aerodynamically to slow you down!

• Dance with Penny Lingenfelter – Children’s participation skit.

This year, Penny Lingenfelter and her audience cast present Peter Pan!

• Kite Making with Deb Cooley
Deb has been making and selling kites for 32 years. So, if you would like to learn how to build kites, all you have to do is ask. She will have a table set up for children of all ages to stop by and build a kite.
