PET PEEVES?

Posted by OCVA / March 27, 2012

Is your dog bored with that same old walk in the park? Has all the squeaky joy been squeezed out of her squeaky toy? Is your whole family just drooling at the door, itching to get out? Then it’s time to stop barking up the wrong tree, because it’s Four-legged Family Fun month on The People’s Coast. And we’re here to help you, your family, your friends and your Fidos get a new leash on life!

Before we get going, let’s talk about where to stay. In Lincoln City, both the Coho Oceanfront Lodge and Inn at Wecoma are offering special pet packages, including doggie beds, treats and bowls. At the Inn at Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City, the “K-9″ package will fetch a pet blanket, doggie treats and a Frisbee for your pooch, and two bottles of award-winning Pelican brews for you. How ruff is that?

Your pet stays free at the Land’s End Motel in Cannon Beach and the Fireside Motel in Yachats, where they’ll also throw in a complimentary gift package of toys and treats. Pets are also welcome at Edgewater Cottages in Waldport and in the family cottages at Windermere on the Beach in Bandon. And for humans with an interest in a different kind of dogleg, Salishan Spa & Golf Resort in Gleneden Beach is serving up a bed and breakfast special this month.

Speaking of going for the green, this month Florence is hosting its annual Green Fair promoting sustainable products and services to help you maximize a “green” lifestyle, as well as their Early Rhody Show and Plant Sale for all you green thumb types out there.

And if all the tweets and twitters in your life have been coming from your smart phone, maybe it’s time to explore the South Slough Reserve in Charleston, where an interpreter will guide you in a search of winged wildlife. Or join the flocks of your fellow birders for guided hikes and kayak expeditions at the Birding and Blues Festival in Pacific City, where you’ll also find great music, informational seminars and a children’s workshop on bird-themed art. Sounds like a smart move to us.

Feeling moved yet? Then shake a leg and head for Florence for the DelTango Cielo concert or the classic sounds of the big band era with the Harry James Orchestra. Swing over to Coos Bay and raise a commemorative glass to your good taste at the First Friday Wine Walk or stroll over to Brookings for the Second Saturday Art Walk.

You wouldn’t want to pass up this month’s Wooden Boat Show, Crab Feed & Ducky Derby in Depoe Bay; the Crab, Seafood & Wine Festival in Astoria; or a chance to sample the culinary wonders of guest Chef Jon Newman at the Spring Brewers Dinner at Pelican Pub & Brewery in Pacific City. Because that would be a doggone shame.

It’s Four-legged Family Fun Month on The People’s Coast, and wherever you go, you’re sure to have a ball!

A TAIL TO REMEMBER?

If you’ve experienced a particularly fetching moment on The People’s Coast with your best friend, share the tale with us online, on Facebook or on Twitter. Because everybody loves a good dog day afternoon.

SPEAK!

You don’t need a bloodhound to sniff out a trail to an excellent family adventure on The People’s Coast. Just dig into The Official Oregon Coast Visitor Guide. It’s full of useful information and you never have to beg, because it’s always free for the asking! So speak up.

PETS ON THE BEACH

There are three considerations to take into account when you walk your pet on Oregon beaches.

  1. Beaches that are within the boundaries of an Oregon state park must have all pets on a leash not more than six feet long and kept under physical control at all times. (OAR 736-010-0030)
  2. If you are on a beach outside of the boundaries of an Oregon state park, Ocean Shore rules apply. Ocean Shore OAR 736-21-0070 states “the owner of any dog, cat, or other animal brought into or kept in the ocean shore recreation area shall be responsible for the animal’s behavior and physical control while in the ocean shore recreation area.” Leashes are not specifically required, but physical control must be maintained.
  3. Where beaches have been designated Western Snowy Plover nesting sites or wildlife habitat areas, all beach pedestrians must stay on the wet sand and all pets must remain on a six foot leash and be kept under physical control. Pet control must be maintained in all wildlife habitat areas and apply to both Oregon State Park and Ocean Shore areas. Designated areas are well signed to warn beach visitors of wildlife habitat areas.

Oh, and here’s a little common-sense reminder: If your pooches do their business on the beach or pathway, make it your business to pick up after them, and leave no unpleasant discoveries afoot for your fellow explorers.
