FREE YOUR INNER CHILD!

Posted by OCVA / February 29, 2012

Is your family starting to feel a little cooped up after three months of winter? Could your inner child use a breath of fresh air? Well, here’s some breaking news: the tide is starting to turn! Spring officially starts this month, and to celebrate its return we’re officially declaring March “Family Fun Month” on The People’s Coast! And we’ve got a boatload of family-centric events, activities and deals bound to put the spring back in your step.

It’s time to come out of your shell! Bop over to North Bend for the Clambake Jazz Festival, with 11 bands playing Dixieland, Big Band, Jump & Jive, Zydeco, Doo-wop and more. Savor the flavor at the Wine & Culinary Festival in Cannon Beach. Or discover handcrafted treasures, including Native American carvings and artifact art, at the annual Arts & Crafts Fair in Yachats.

Why sulk around feeling bent out of shape when you could alter your mood with the help of the world-class instructors at this month’s Yoga Festival in Cannon Beach? Feeling bored? Then get your feet wet with professional instructors who will teach you the ins of outs of ocean surfing at Ossies Surf Shop in Newport. Enjoy a nature walk followed by a beach bonfire at Overleaf Lodge in Yachats. Or take a walk back in time at the Michael Jackson “Moonwalker” concert at Three Rivers Casino in Florence.

No, you’re not imagining things. Lincoln City really is hosting a Festival of Illusions and a Spring Break Magic Camp, where you can learn the tricks of the trade from a seasoned professional. But they’ve got even more tricks up their sleeve! This month, Lincoln City is also hosting the “Ready Set Cook!” competitive cooking event, a production of “The Supporting Cast” at Theatre West and the Oregon Made Film Festival, featuring a series of films shot in Oregon.

Think blondes have more fun? Well, they sure do in Florence, where the “Here Come the Blondes” concert will explode with a selection of songs from the movies of such celebrated bombshells as Marilyn Monroe and Ginger Rogers. On a more serious note, Women’s History Month in Lincoln City will highlight the often-unsung accomplishments of women in Oregon’s history and culture.

Is your mood starting to pick up yet? Then get in the spirit and join other volunteers to help clean up our beaches during the annual SOLV Oregon Beach Cleanup up and down the coast. Or pick up some tips for your home improvement projects at the Home & Garden Show in Florence. Because it really is time you did something about that slow drip in the kitchen faucet.

Better watch out; late March is Whale Watch Week on the entire coast, where trained volunteers are on hand to help you spot those migrating behemoths from 22 official whale watching sites, including The Inn at Spanish Head in Lincoln City, one of only two indoor sites on the coast. If you keep your eyes open, you might even spot one of the 100 glass floats awaiting your discovery on the beach in Lincoln City.

And bless us, we almost forgot to mention the annual Blessing of the Fleet in Newport, which will include a parade of sea-faring vessels, a memorial service for those lost at sea and a such lively competitions as crab pot stacking, net mending and knot tying.

Dig this: this month both the Coho Oceanfront Lodge and Inn at Wecoma in Lincoln City are offering a “Kids’ Beach Package,” which includes kites, snacks, beach ball and toys, unlimited DVD rentals and a guide to local kid-friendly destinations. Also in Lincoln City, The Inn at Cape Kiwanda has a special “Day at the Beach” package that includes a kite, beach ball, Frisbee, a bucket of sand tools and Tillamook ice cream cones; and the Inn at Spanish Head is offering a spring break special that includes oceanfront lodging, dinner for two and two tickets to the Oregon Coast Aquarium.

Fishing for more? Then you better chart a course for Yachats! The Heceta Head Bed & Breakfast is serving up delicious seven-course breakfasts and five-course dinners paired with palate-pleasing Northwest wines. The Edgewater Cottages is offering seven nights for the price of six at its oceanfront cottages for “kids, dogs and well-behaved adults.” And The Fireside Motel will take 20 percent off your room rate if you contribute a can of food to the Lincoln County Food Share Drive. How can you pass that up?

Well, that’s the rundown for this month. Isn’t it time to free your inner child and join the whole family for a run of fun on The People’s Coast? Sure it is.

ALL IN THE FAMILY.

Had a memorable family moment on The People’s Coast? Well, share your stories and tell us all about it online, on Facebook or on Twitter. After all, we’re all one big happy family around here.
