GIDDY-UP!

Posted by OCVA / August 1, 2011

We’re positively giddy about all the good stuff in store for you this month on The People’s Coast. We’ve got dune races and sand board competitions. Seafood festivals and sandcastle contests. Belly dancers and treasure hunts. Paddleboat excursions and equestrian beach tours. And that’s just for starters. So whether you want to hike, pedal, paddle or just horse around on the beach, round up the family and hoof on over to the Oregon Coast!

You want festive? We’ve got festive! Chowder down at the annual Seafood Festival in Charleston. There’s a day-long celebration of belly dancing in Florence; an antique street fair and classic car show in Toledo; the annual County Fair in Tillamook and five days of moto-cross and drag races at Dunefest in Reedsport and Winchester Bay. They’ll even have a drive-in movie night.

Get a head start on your holiday gift list at the Art and Craft Festival in Lincoln City. Wade into the Festival of the Lakes in Dunes City. Get the most out of life looking for Least Sandpipers and Wandering Tattlers at Charleston‘s Oregon Shorebird Festival.

Search for 200 antique Japanese glass floats hidden on the beach in Lincoln City. Compete against other teams of scurvy landlubbers at the Pirate Treasure Hunt in Depoe Bay. Or how about this: you’ll find authentic Native American dancers, drumming, music and art at the Nesika Illahee Pow-Wow in Siletz.

You say your plans are still up in the air at this time? Perfect! Try a romantic sunset helicopter tour and dinner for two in Florence. Stroll beneath the treetops on a guided forest tour in Coos Bay. Catch some air at the skate parks in Seaside and Toledo or the Huck Fest X competitions in Florence. And hang on to your cowboy hats, ladies and gents, because this month the incomparable Miss Loretta Lynn will be appearing in concert at Chinook Winds in Lincoln City!

If that’s music to your ears, then you won’t want to miss the annual Regatta in Astoria, where you’ll find boat races, parades, a salmon BBQ and — talk about fireworks – a performance by Reba McEntire! You’ll re-experience your old inner harmony enjoying the barbershop quartets performing at the Harbormasters Concert in Florence or the Radio Disney Concert in Gleneden Beach.

Want us to show you more? Really? Okay. How about the Wooden Boat Show in Toledo, the Coin Show in Florence or the Flower and Giant Kite shows in Lincoln City? Speaking of Lincoln City, this month they’ll show you a thing or two about the joy of cooking at a series of demonstrations and classes in everything from grilled eggplant rolls to Oregon Berry galette.

Did any of that whet your appetite? Then head of to the Chef’s Table Culinary Institute in Coos Bay for lunch or dinner, the Big Wheel General Store in Bandon for their famous fudge or any one of the many Farmers’ Markets up and down the coast for your pick of farm-fresh produce.

You can exercise even more options with a Kayak or Stand-up Paddleboat ride on the Yaquina River in Toledo, a boat or bike rental at Blue Heron Landing in Lincoln City, the Oregon Coast Adventure Bike Tour of Three Capes Loop or, gasp, the 197-mile Hood to Coast Relay race, which comes to a merciful end in Seaside.

Those preferring a slightly less challenging form of exercise can opt for a leisurely stroll through Merritt Lavender Farm in Bandon, Darlingtonia Wayside in Florence, Shore Acres in Charleston or the First Friday Art Walk in Coos Bay . Or just sit down in Lincoln City to take part in the sandcastle-building contest or to take in Comedy at the Coast at Chinook Winds.

And once you’re all rested up again, get back in the swing of things by setting a course for the Sunset Bay or Watson Ranch golf courses in Charleston and Coos Bay, respectively. What are you waiting, fore?

Or, hay, let someone else do all the walking and still enjoy an exhilarating beach experience by mounting up at Sea Ranch Stable in Cannon Beach, Oregon Beach Rides in Nehalem, Green Acres Equestrian Center in Lincoln City, C&M Stables in Florence or Hawks Rest Ranch at Pistol River. And if exploring the beach on horseback sounds like a sure bet to you, hoof on over to Three Rivers Casino & Hotel in Florence for their C&M Stables Getaway Package .

When it’s time to bed down ol’ Nessie for the night and find a peaceful spot to get a little shut-eye for yourself, you won’t have any trouble rounding up a great deal on a great place to stay. Surfsand Resort in Cannon Beach has a “Grand Trippin’ Package” with a free pass to Ecola State Park, a free kite from Pinky’s Kite Factory and a bucketful of other goodies. There’s a “Stay and Play” special at Microtel Inn & Suites in Seaside and 100 percent ADA-compliant rooms at The Coho Oceanfront Lodge in Lincoln City.

You’ll also find perfectly fetching, pet-friendly accommodations and specials at Shore Pine Vacation Rentals in Pacific City, Rogue Public House in Newport and Edgewater Cottages in Waldport. And for a real escape from the ordinary, the Inn at Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City is offering a Three Capes Escape Package , including self-guided tour maps, an assortment of picnic supplies and your choice of Oregon beer or wines. We’re feeling a little giddy just thinking about it!

25th Oregon Shorebird Festival in Charleston

It’s been 25 years since Cape Arago Audubon Society started the Oregon Shorebird Festival in the small town of Charleston, OR. During this time, many generations of shorebirds have stopped over to feed and rest in the estuaries of Coos Bay and Bandon as they migrate between their breeding and wintering grounds. Every year without fail there have been bird watchers both new and experienced to witness this event. We invite you to experience the fall migration of shorebirds along the scenic Oregon coast.

Bring your best pair of binoculars as we search the estuaries and mudflats for Black-bellied plover, Dunlin, Western and Least sandpiper, and Whimbrel, then visit the rocky jetties to seek out Surfbirds, Wandering tattlers, and Black Turnstones. You can also walk a mile of Bandon Beach to see the federally threatened Western Snowy plover. Join us during this weekend of birding fun.
