Christmas Crab is Coming!

Posted by OCVA / December 10, 2010

Since the wee hours this morning, Newport’s Yaquina Bay was bustling. The Dungeness Crab fleet started heading out across the bar, one by one. The pot-laden boats headed over the swells and into the open ocean where they are racing to get to their chosen fishing spots. Once there, the boats will “dump” their pots and then speed back to port and retrieve the next load of empty pots and more bait. This circuit will continue until each boat has all of their gear in the water. After the gear is all set and has a short soak, then the hard work of hauling in the catch really begins.

The first crab of this season should start hitting the docks on Sunday so get ready to spread out the newspaper, melt some butter, man the crab-crackers because Christmas Crab will be coming soon!
