Ocean OOOhs

Posted by richard rochat of Beaverton, Or / August 31, 2010

My niece relocated from Cleaveland, OH here to Beaverton, OR. After settling in I asked her to bring her dog Bailey and we took that first trip to the Oregon Coast; Seaside, Warrenton, Astoria, and Cannon Beach.

We only had time for a day trip, but what a day, we left Beaverton at 6:00 AM and returned home at 9:00 PM. It was a really memorable 15 hour day. Everywhere we went Bailey was a real hit and seemed to enjoy his first trip to the beach as well.

This was the first time my niece had seen an ocean, she is 20ish and as with most youths, not easily impressed. She was sure the pacific ocean would look very similar to Lake Erie which she was used to seeing. Needless to say; she admits they are not even close to similar. She was very awed by the waves and the vistas.

Our first stop was at the cove in Seaside to watch a couple surfers in their wet suits with riding the waves washing up on the rocky beach. Then a walk up the prom to Broadway and through the shops.
We left Seaside and drove to Astoria for lunch at the Cannery cafe. There is such a seaport village feel and smell. Then you add in the seagulls their location over the water it makes for a really enjoyable, definitely not Ohio experience.

After lunch we took a quick drive out to Battery Russell at Fort Stevens for a quick walk about. Then headed south stopping at the wreck of the Peter Iredale, which really impresses visitors.
It was on to Cannon beach for an afternoon of shopping the galleries and dinner at Sweet Basil’s Cafe, which brought a close to her first trip to the coast.
