Crazy for Oregon

Posted by Shannon Smith / April 29, 2010

“Are you crazy?” That was the response again and again when we told friends, family and even the people in line ahead of us at the grocery store that we were packing up our four children aged 2, 4, 6 and 8 and driving more than 1,500 miles to spend four weeks tenting and yurting tip-to-tip along the Oregon coast from Brookings to Astoria last year.

Little did we know what a spectacular vacation awaited our family. We spent days exploring the vast and varied beaches, We did cartwheels down enormous sand dunes. We studied a fascinating variety of marine life in the tide pools. We stood on cliffs feeling exhilarated and insignificant, and stretched out on warm beaches to watch the sunset behind historic lighthouses, amazing monoliths and lovely little sail boats. And we ate really, really well at every town and village along the way. (Order almost anything at Griff’s on the Dock in Port Orford.) We visited a shipwreck at Fort Stephens. We fed the seals at the Seaside aquarium. We took an unbelievable elevator ride into the world’s largest sea lion cave.

We began planning our 2010 vacation to the Oregon coast two days after we got home last year. And we cannot wait to come back!

Hi Shannon, sounds like an amazing trip! We are heading to Oregon for 4 weeks from the beginning of July to the beginning of August. We are from Alberta too, Calgary. Any tips you have? Our kids are 8 & 10 years old, we are going to be travelling by RV

    Hi Shannon,
We too love The Oregon Coast. We will be going for our second time for 4 weeks in July. We will be going with our grandkids, and camping along the way in our trailer. I know it will be a trip that they as well as us will remember always.
