ROVIN’ WITH ROVER

Posted by OCVA / March 30, 2010

The dog days of summer are still months away, but April is Four-Legged Friends month on The People’s Coast.

It would be a doggone shame to miss the fetching opportunities just begging to be explored this month on The People’s Coast. There’s Doggie Olympics and a costume parade, special pet-friendly rates and always lots of really cool things to smell! So don’t be a heel. Collar your whole family, come for a visit – and stay! You’ll have a ball! But before you do, pause for a moment to read the regulations regarding leash requirements in Oregon’s state parks. Okay? Good boy!

Think you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Then check out the Mutt Masters Dog Show and Olympics in Lincoln City. Strut your stuff at the Doggie Costume Parade and then enjoy a free pontoon boat ride during Doggie Weekend at Loon Lake Resort in Reedsport. Lap up the sites and suds at Brewer’s Memorial Ale Festival, “the world’s largest dog-friendly beer festival,” in Newport. Or simply enjoy a nice old-fashioned jog with Rover on Cannon Beach.

Begging for more? What dog wouldn’t dig a day in the dunes south of Reedsport? If your pet’s been a really good boy, reward him with one of the cool accessories at Beach Puppy Dog Boutique in Seaside. They’ll let you know if that sweater makes your mutt look big. Sniff out an all-natural treat at Mary Ann’s Natural Pet in Florence, where, hello kitty, they even have cat and aromatherapy products! Also in Florence, you can pamper your pooch at Doggie Den Daycare while you chow down on the luscious culinary creations being served up at the Coastal Cuisine Gala. Doggie bag, anyone?

When it’s time to stay, you won’t have a rough time finding a pet-friendly deal this month. The Inn at Cape Kiwanda in Pacific City is offering a “doggie discount” package that includes treats, chew toys, a Frisbee and a stylish bandana. The Land’s End Motel in Cannon Beach is waiving pet fees during April. Daisy can snuggle into her very own bed and enjoy a lovely biscuit for no extra fee this month at The Best Western Pier Point Inn in Florence. And chew on this: Donating a can of food will fetch you a 20 percent discount at Fireside Motel in Yachats.

What puppy wouldn’t love staying in one of the pet-friendly vacation homes available from Shorepine Vacation Rentals in Pacific City or the Harborview Inn & RV Park in Garibaldi? Edgewater Cottages in Waldport welcomes dogs, kids and “well-behaved adults.” And pets are always welcome at a number of RV parks and cottages in Gold Beach, Brookings-Harbor, and Coos Bay. So don’t just sit there drooling over the possibilities; roll on over to The People’s Coast! Your dachshund wonders what you’re wading for.

SPEAK!

Had a terrific pet-centric experience on The People’s Coast? Well, speak up. Share the puppy love with your fellow humans online. You could win a two-night stay in an oceanfront room at the Fireside Motel in Yachats, and your dog will be the envy of every cool cat in the neighborhood.

PETS ON THE BEACH

There are three considerations to take into account when you walk your pet on Oregon beaches.

  1. Beaches that are within the boundaries of an Oregon state park http://For more infomation visit www.oregon.gov/OPRD must have all pets on a leash not more than six feet long and kept under physical control at all times. (OAR 736-010-0030)
  2. If you are on a beach outside of the boundaries of an Oregon state park, Ocean Shore rules apply. Ocean Shore OAR 736-21-0070 states “the owner of any dog, cat, or other animal brought into or kept in the ocean shore recreation area shall be responsible for the animal’s behavior and physical control while in the ocean shore recreation area.” Leashes are not specifically required, but physical control must be maintained.
  3. Where beaches have been designated Western Snowy Plover nesting sites or wildlife habitat areas, all beach pedestrians must stay on the wet sand and all pets must remain on a six foot leash and be kept under physical control. Pet control must be maintained in all wildlife habitat areas and apply to both Oregon State Park and Ocean Shore areas. Designated areas are well signed to warn beach visitors of wildlife habitat areas.

Oh, and here’s a little common-sense reminder: If your pooches do their business on the beach or pathway, make it your business to pick up after them, and leave no unpleasant discoveries afoot for your fellow explorers.
