Great Lighthouse Safari

Posted by Natalie J. Vandenberghe of Junction City, OR / February 12, 2009

Although I’ve enjoyed several mini-vacations to various spots on the Oregon coast–where each location had something special, whether the perfect spot on the beach or a favorite restaurant–instead of naming just one location, I’d like to mention my Lighthouse Safari. I started my journey at the Maritime Museum in Astoria very early in the morning. Just for good measure, I then drove north up to Cape Disappointment and the North Head Light in Ilwaco, WA. Traveling south from there, I went to every lighthouse on the Oregon coast, stopping at all which were open to the public. I took Lighthouse tours and walked around when able. After traveling about half-way down 101, I spent the night. The next day I continued my journey, once again stopping at all the lighthouses that were open to the public. I ended my fantastic “safari” at Battery Point Light in Crescent City, CA. Although I’ve enjoyed many stormy days at the coast, I was glad the weather was perfect for the duration of my trip. The visibility was excellent, and the absence of rain made getting in and out of my vehicle at every park much more enjoyable (not having to get back in my car sopping wet). I am so blessed to live in this beautiful state and to be continually reminded of God’s greatness.
I regret I’m not able to include a photo with my submission.
