Cannon Beach – Accessible and beautiful

We recently had our great friends in town from New Hampshire. We headed to Cannon Beach – a lovely seaside town and artist’s haven 1.5 hours west of Portland. The Surfsand Resort Hotel has been renovated in the past couple years and they have amazing family suites overlooking the ocean. You can sit in the soaker tub and look out at the waves crashing on shore. Our friend’s son, age 7, is in a wheelchair and they have a paved ramp that goes right onto the beach from their parking lot. There’s a rental shop next door that rents beach accessible wheel chairs with huge rubber wheels. It was fantastic—Samuel could really enjoy the beach and we strolled down to visit the stunning monolith that sits just offshore, Haystack Rock. At dusk you can walk to Haystack Rock and explore the tidepools and show your kids that starfish are really real and count the anemones and talk to the marine biologists who are often on hand to answer questions.

The Surfsand has free beach chairs, towels and tons of beach toys for the kids to borrow, and it’s a dog friendly hotel so there’s always fresh water for the pups. Plus a great indoor pool. There’s a large creek, 3 inches deep, that flows into the ocean right at the hotel property, which is perfect and safe for little ones to play in for hours. That’s where our son found a seasnake (seaweed) and created a fantastical tunnel kingdom.

Grab a menu from the Gower Street Bistro right next door to the Surfsand and call your lunch order in. Succulent pulled pork sandwiches and burgers, plus great dinners and very family friendly.
